India consumes just 0.50 square metres of ceramic tiles per person per year — compared to China’s 2.6, Brazil’s 3.4, and Europe’s 5 to 6, according to RAK Ceramics India CEO Anil Beejawat, a figure corroborated by IBEF and ICCTAS research. The gap represents one of the most compelling structural demand arguments in any building materials category globally. India’s domestic tile consumption is forecast to grow at a 6.3% CAGR over 2025–2029, reaching 2.2 billion sqm by 2029 — an addition of 580 million sqm over five years — according to the MECS-Acimac Research Centre’s Ceramic Tile Market Forecast Analysis. The expansion is underpinned by India’s GDP forecast to grow at 6.5% annually over the same period, a 40 million unit housing shortage still to be addressed, and rising disposable incomes driving premiumisation across Tier-1 and Tier-2 markets.
What this means for the trade: India is at 0.50 sqm per capita. The ceiling is 5 to 6. When dealers ask whether the market will hold up — this is the number to share. The growth runway for any sales team building dealer networks and market coverage today is generational.
