India’s monsoon turned severe this week, with floods, cloudbursts, and landslides claiming more than 70 lives across Jammu & Kashmir, Nagaland, Assam, Uttarakhand, and adjoining states since July 18, 2026. In Kashmir’s Poonch, Rajouri, and Doda districts alone, 15 people were killed and several remain missing after flash floods swept through villages and highway corridors. A separate tragedy struck Sikkim, where an under-construction tunnel collapsed killing 20 workers, with rescue operations hampered by continued rainfall. Assam authorities have requested Army and Air Force standby support as river levels remain critical. The IMD has forecast active monsoon conditions — with heavy to extremely heavy rainfall at isolated places — to persist over northwest, northeast, and east India through at least July 25.
What this means for the trade: Dealers and RSMs covering northern and northeastern corridors should plan for site-access disruptions, delayed material dispatch, and paused construction activity through late July — project timelines in affected states are likely to slip by two to four weeks minimum.
