More than 670 of Morbi’s approximately 865 PNG-connected ceramic units had resumed operations by May 17, 2026 – up from just 83 units on March 31 – according to Gujarat Energy Minister Rushikesh Patel, as reported by DeshGujarat on May 19. The recovery was enabled by Gujarat Energy Limited (formerly Gujarat Gas Limited), which diversified gas sourcing beyond Middle Eastern markets at spot rates and coordinated directly with the Morbi Ceramic Association to bring units back online in a structured manner. At the peak of the crisis, nearly 450 of Morbi’s 670-odd active factories had ceased operations following the Strait of Hormuz disruption that collapsed propane supply chains in mid-March. While production has largely returned, input costs remain significantly elevated from pre-crisis levels and full normalisation of gas supply is not yet confirmed.
What this means for the trade: Supply is recovering but prices are not – plan Q3 procurement at current elevated price levels and do not hold out for a correction that is unlikely to materialise this quarter.
